After reading The Tipping Point,I am 3/4 of the way through Outlier. Cannot put it down. Thank you Malcom for steering me into a more productive world. Allowing me to tweak my new life with your research findings. Now I understand better of what I understood and experienced. Outlier is a great guide for raising children!! Happy to have come across your books by accident.

CLASS RULES

I am of the same generation as Gates and Jobs, having been born in 1954. I have come to view our generation as a sort of "Lost Generation," born too late to live in the 50's state of mind and too late to partake in the rage and catharsis the 60's had to offer.

In fact, as I have reconnected with my classmates over the years I have found that many of them are recovering alchoholics or addicts picking of the pieces of the remaining years of their lives.

I am sure that many of our generation had the same capacity as Jobs and Gates.

"Outliers" puts class distictions beautifully and subtly front and center.

What saved me was a recruiter from UC San Diego that became outraged when my counselor said that I didn't deserve the privilege of going to an university.

I dropped out 2 years later because of my political activities which resulted in diciplinary hearings that I servived but burned me out.

I wound up in Santa Barbara because of the poetry scene that was happening there. I wanted more formal training in writing so I tried to get into UC Santa Barbara. An Equal Opportunity Program counselor pulled some strings and I was admitted to the College of Creative Studies, a free standing college within the university.

Without these acts of kindness and other opportunities I may have eneded up like my classmates.

Class kept Gates above the fray

Sir Malcolm,

I'm Brian Bantugan. I'm a Ph.D. candidate at the University of the Philippines. I am using your tipping point as part of my study framework along side Bakhtin's, Gramsci's and Foucault's theories in relation to my study on a particular genre of Filipino films. I was in New York last April but unfortunately my dissertation proposal wasn't even written yet. I'm planning to go back and I hope that by some chance I can meet you in person. More power!

On page 149 of The Tipping Point there is a comment that research suggests a link between genetics and criminal behavior. Can anyone point me to authority for that statement?

Let me throw a couple of other issues into the stew.

In the US, drugs are given FDA approval for specific diseases and uses. That's what all the testing is for and the Pharmaceutical companies can only put those tested uses "On the Label". But doctors in the US have the wide ranging ability to prescribe Drug A for use B. This is called "off-label use". It's done a lot and sometimes becomes common use. That's why Cher used Rogaine for acne, etc...

BUT one of the only Federal Laws, other than for the heavily controlled substances like Morphine, which BANS off-label use is the 1992 law for Anabolic Steroids and HGH. Why?
What made lawmakers make a special case for HGH? and not interferon, or beta-blockers, or yadayadayada.

It is doubly unusual when you consider that HGH wasn't around very much when that law was made.

And if there is healing benefit to HGH, why has it been precluded for normal medical use? A doctor CANNOT prescribe HGH except for the most unusual of conditions (Juvenile dwarfism, et al).

We all know the sausage factory which is our legislative process. So what lobbyist/special interest group rammed thru this one?

Unusual.

One MAJOR thing wrong with your article on Dog Fighting and Football ... the position of being chosen for gameness in a football player, or whatever, race car driver ... is a chosen path by that human. The dog/pittie never chose to have to be picked for gameness .. to fight. The dog was placed in that position by a human - to fight or die. The human athlete never was in that position - he chose that position for himself. For whatever reason ... fame ... money ... love of the sport. But he chose. The dog never did. Your article did no favors of telling the truth about abused fighting dogs or dogs used for bait .. a normal human who choses to play football or race a car as an occupation ... AND those like Michael Vick, who will always be a serial (six year) animal torturer/murderer.

Hey Malcolm -
I appreciate you man - I heard you a while back at Ball State University. I must say that I've learned some powerful principles from your work.

I thought you might want to hear my response to a pretty ignorant guy that said one of your presentations was dissapointing...here is my response to him...

Malcolm Gladwell is INSIGHTFUL ...He has developed the useful gift of the perceptive eye. Much like a good comedian finds the explosive yet imperceptible humor in the most mundane activities of ordinary life, he finds extremely valuable knowledge, truths and wisdom within the seemingly mundane occurrences and patterns of everyday life.

Disappointing? Only to someone who cannot see a gift at work in a man who has allowed it to flower through him...but, of course, only a few can ever see the bud of a flower in the act of blossoming...

But if you are fortunate enough to see it, it makes your enjoyment of the beauty of that flower that much more satisfying.

His gift of perception and presentation in a garden of dandelions is a perennial - and it blooms over and over again (Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers...).
Patient, determined observation with a purpose in our fast food society is indeed a lost art. Thanks Malcolm for using the gift in you to help beautify our understanding of our daily lives in this world. To me, in the world of writing, you have become Michael Jordan in game six.

Being selective about which drugs we're at war with is nothing new. Are we at war with aspirin, coffee, or even alcohol? No. I have doubts that pointing out the hypocrisies in warring with one drug over another will have an instructive effect, but we should nonetheless continue to keep making the point. Thanks for the post.

After reading your book, "Outliers," I think that Quentin Tarantino fits into the profile of an outlier. He had the passion, the encyclopedic knowledge of film from his passion, and the opportunity to come into his own at a time when the independent production companies and the mini-majors were taking root.

Malcolm,
I am today ranking you one of the foremost insightful individuals in any literary or journalistic pursuit I have heard to date. You write about things that other people may think but lack the ability to present the concepts in a digestible relevant way. I appreciate your work.

Bio

  • I'm a writer for the New Yorker magazine, and the author of four books, "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference", "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking" and "Outliers: The Story of Success." My latest book, "What the Dog Saw" is a compilation of stories published in The New Yorker. I was born in England, and raised in southwestern Ontario in Canada. Now I live in New York City.

My great claim to fame is that I'm from the town where they invented the BlackBerry. My family also believes (with some justification) that we are distantly related to Colin Powell. I invite you to look closely at the photograph above and draw your own conclusions.
